Why use Keywords?

Thursday, December 17th, 2009
The competition in the web world is getting tougher due to numerous new websites that are being created every single day. However, this does not leave us empty handed, as the world wide web has something to everyone. We just have to bring on the challenge of gaining a good ranking or rather figure out ways to magnetize our target market.
In order to compete well with other websites, picking up a competitive “keyword” to use is vital. A keyword is a word or phrase that represent the main a idea of a content. These are the words that people would most probably use to get to the information they want.  So as webmasters, keywords should be based from the actual words that real people use when looking up something on search engines.
The task now is to research for competitive keywords that will expose your site to your targeted viewers. You can use various keyword tools available online such as Wordtracker and Google Adwords Keyword Tool, to view the volume of searches of a keyword.  Since popular keywords are already saturated and used by lots of sites, it would be difficult to rank well on search engines by using them. To avoid getting buried deeply in search engine results, use long tail keywords that would serve your content right. This type of keywords are  less searched but more specific keyword phrase.
Less search? What’s the use? Alright, you might get less traffic by using long tail keyword but this isn’t bad at all. The traffic that you’ll get from this type of keywords are traffic from targeted audience you set. They have used direct and specific keyword because they know exactly  what they want. This yields to better conversion than a broad  keyword which attracts lots of traffic (if you succeeded to outrank other sites) but leads to a lower conversion ratio.
Keep in mind that keywords are essential. It is one factor that can make a big difference in traffic volume. In other words it can make or break your site. One good reason why webmasters are spending a lot of time in researching the right keywords to use for the content of their site.
