Beginner’s Guide to Social Bookmarking

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

When we are new to something, we often feel reluctant to step out and do our own thing. On the contrary, others feel the opposite way. Nonetheless, reluctant or not we must know what we are up to in order to avoid any grave misconduct.

There is no official rulebook for social bookmarking, but the mere presence of the administrators and moderators means that there are policies and guidelines that maintain the order around the social web space. Perhaps, it won’t hurt you to learn few reminders before you join a certain social bookmarking community. Check out some general guidelines that apply to most social bookmarking sites.

Just like anywhere else, treat people like how you wanted to be treated. Social bookmarking involves conversation through comments and its best to be nice in order to gather friends that will help you establish your social media presence. FYI, you need people to digg, retweet or vote your content so being quiet or rude won’t do any help.

Submit variety of websites in a regular basis. It is understood that you want to concentrate with your niche but touching neighboring topics would help you offer something new. Social bookmarking sites work due to the wide selection of amazing and interesting stuff that people submit. It will also help you look more natural and not a marketer if you do it so.

Be sure to submit website to the right category. It is common sense to put things in the right place so people who actually interested will eventually find it.

Don’t be limited to one social bookmarking site. There are literally thousands of networks in the web, joining a couple of known social media sites will help you broaden your reach.

Use tags correctly. Help people find your site by putting tags on it. You know how search engines work so make your site accessible.

Be generous and helpful with your friends. Initiate voting and retweeting your friend’s submission and most likely they’ll do the same for you. It might be an old saying but “give in order to receive” still works in the modern times.

Be human and personal. It’s best not to use automatic submission services. Take the word “social” seriously.

One more thing for impatient people out there, social bookmarking does not work over night, it takes time, hard work and patience. So better condition yourself earlier for a great chance to achieve your goal.
