Things I learned from Forum Posting

March 1st, 2010

Traffic online is definitely the kind of traffic that we all desire unless it makes you happy to stay in car on the street under massive UV rays attack. Well, at least for internet marketers the volume of visitors reaching their site makes big sense. One way of pulling traffic on your site is through forum posting. Basically, you go to forums related to your niche then join the community, interact with people, build relationship and establish a good reputation. It sounds pretty easy and it is indeed, but you have to master the forum etiquettes. Yes, there are etiquettes and I think it applies to everything that you do online.

Initially, you should familiarize yourself about the rules and regulations of the forum and posting. Each forum has it; some are general like no spamming, no cursing, trashes and stuffs. Others are so strict, you just missed something and before you know it, you’re banned. Pity those who only have static IP address.

So you read the rules and got oriented. Ideally, before you can start posting, you have to introduce your self politely like all newbie does. Tell something about yourself or about expectations on the new community you are joining, just don’t leave the thread empty. It’s also nice to fix your profile and add an image.

You might be feeling excited to dive in and start new topics. But be certain that there are no threads similar to yours; spend few minutes to search whether there is existing thread to avoid duplicates. Same goes with double posting, be careful not to hit the submit button multiple times. Initiate meaningful topics and act in a give and take manner. It’ll be beneficial if you help often, so you can establish a good reputation in the community.

Use proper grammar and spelling. You definitely don’t want to have a misunderstanding regarding what you are saying. For sure, you would encounter some personal differences on opinions and insights. Just stay civil and handle those differences smartly. I remember a phrase from a movie I watched, “when you get mad you loose”.

It is important that you add your signature on every post. This could count as backlink to your site. However, every forum has a rule about links; make sure that you check the requirements before putting a site link. I bet you don’t want to be misinterpreted as a spammer. Some forums require a number of post before you can add links or signatures. Others require weeks or months of being a member. This is crucial and if you ignore this rule you can instantly get banned by the forum administrator.

As how the real community goes, forum gives you a chance to meet people with the same interest like yours. This can increase the chance of your site’s exposure to your targeted audience. Be certain that you showcase your worth through your words, those could be the key to your goal.

Radios and TVs  help artist to get exposure and let people know about what they got. It’s indispensable, a new artist or product comes close to consumers. In the long run once they have established their worth, people will look towards them.

This goes the same way with your content. Come close to your audience, especially  the ones you target. Submit press release article to PR sites, article to Article Directories and Social Bookmarking sites. Use social networking website such as Facebook and Twitter to let your friends know about your recent post. Join forums related to your niche and participate with discussions. This is one way of exposing yourself to people with the same niche. Soon, you’ll establish familiarity which is essential for traffic.

Back to Basic: Meta description tags a.k.a. “Snippets “

January 27th, 2010

Huge percentage of population use search engines to get necessary information they need from the internet. Basically, these people want to have the things they need pin pointed among the massive data available on the net.  They enter their keywords in the search box then see the search results presented by their search engine of choice. Hardly anyone knows your domain, they are unfamiliar but they would know that you are what they are looking for just looking at your snippet.

Back in early 2006, Google introduced the snippet— this is 2-line, approximately 150 to 200 (depending on what search engine you target) character summary that goes along with the link to the website page.  This is descriptive summary of what the page is all about to guide users as to what website they will visit to get what they are looking for. It’s like a preview of what the user is going to expect with the site’s content.

Snippet is made through meta description tags.  The tag is intended to be a brief rundown of the page’s content.  It is made to display targeted keywords, not for ranking purposes, but to indicate the content to searchers. If the title is too vague for the visitors, the snippet will clarify and elaborate things out. If you don’t intentionally put meta description tags, search engines will automatically pull out content from the page and sometimes it ends up looking weird.

Here’s the HTML tag to apply:

< meta name=”description” content=”A description of the page” />

One..Two..Three-way links

January 6th, 2010

If you’ve been in the web space for awhile, you know how links matter in achieving good position in search engines. This is known to be one component of search engine optimization that needs time and effort aside from the presence of killer content of course. Now, let’s get to know these links well to figure out what’s best for our SEO campaign.

1. One-way link
A one way link is link from a particular website going to another site. This link is the best kind of link to target in acquiring good ranking positions in search engines. However, it is undeniably hard to obtain it, unless your website is valuable enough for another website to link to you without anything in return. Therefore, what you can do is to produce quality and compelling content to make it less difficult for you to gather one way links. Next to do is to search for relevant sites such as forums and blogs that have less quantity of outbound links with decent page rankings and try to provide comments as intelligent as possible. Make yourself sound valuable to increase the chance of getting a precious one way link.
2. Two-way links/Reciprocal links
Reciprocal links happens when two websites agreed to exchange links. The effectiveness of link trading can be said to be questionable. This old SEO technique is fairly recognized by search engines and receives less value in gaining page rankings. However, it’s not totally invaluable, if you want a new site to get crawled easily this kind of link is a good start.
3. Three-way links
Three-way links also known as “pyramid linking” involves three websites. Basically, website 1 links to site 2, website 2 links to 3, then finally, site 3 connects to 1, making a triangular pattern. This link pattern could deceive search engines as one way links, yet too much three-way link building can increase the chance for search engines to detect it and worst get penalized. It is important to know the risks in building this kind of link.
4. Interchanging links
Interchanging links is often applied in link wheels. Basically, 10 or more Web 2.0 sites are involved, website 1 links to site number 2, 2 links to 3 and 3 connects to the last site, forming a circle pattern. Meanwhile, you have your main website that you are trying to promote in the center of the circle pattern; each Web 2.0 sites involve will give a one way link to the center or the main website forming a wheel pattern. It can be said that this interchanging links can put your website in a good ranking position in no time.
Remember, these links have strengths and weaknesses and knowing those can maximize your SEO campaign result.

Images for SEO

December 27th, 2009
Images are appealing to readers. It serves well for aesthetic purpose and gives a blog a more personal touch. Personally I’m fond of looking at the images first before reading an article. It catches my interest and attention, so I assume it works the same way to other blog readers. In fact, most of us do a lot of skimming, so it matters that you put effort to the image that that you’ll pick to accompany your post. In return, an appealing image will eventually boost your reader’s interest and powerful enough to solicit their attention.
Aside from the artistic layout that images add in a post, it could also be utilized as part of your SEO campaign. SEO experts recognize that search engines not only focus with the text on the site in measuring its value. The bots take a look at the code of the image file.
You should know that search engines cannot read letter on a “.jpg” file. That’s a one good reason why you should use the “alternative” or ALT tag to place attributes to describe the image file. When uploading an image, don’t forget to rename it with the appropriate keywords in accordance with your post, same thing applies with the alt attribute when adding your code.
Basically, it follows like this: img src=”image.jpg” alt=”alternative description here”
As a take away there are two things that Google acknowledges when ranking images, the first one is the alt attribute of the image file and the context of the page and the relevance of it to the attribute.

Why use Keywords?

December 17th, 2009
The competition in the web world is getting tougher due to numerous new websites that are being created every single day. However, this does not leave us empty handed, as the world wide web has something to everyone. We just have to bring on the challenge of gaining a good ranking or rather figure out ways to magnetize our target market.
In order to compete well with other websites, picking up a competitive “keyword” to use is vital. A keyword is a word or phrase that represent the main a idea of a content. These are the words that people would most probably use to get to the information they want.  So as webmasters, keywords should be based from the actual words that real people use when looking up something on search engines.
The task now is to research for competitive keywords that will expose your site to your targeted viewers. You can use various keyword tools available online such as Wordtracker and Google Adwords Keyword Tool, to view the volume of searches of a keyword.  Since popular keywords are already saturated and used by lots of sites, it would be difficult to rank well on search engines by using them. To avoid getting buried deeply in search engine results, use long tail keywords that would serve your content right. This type of keywords are  less searched but more specific keyword phrase.
Less search? What’s the use? Alright, you might get less traffic by using long tail keyword but this isn’t bad at all. The traffic that you’ll get from this type of keywords are traffic from targeted audience you set. They have used direct and specific keyword because they know exactly  what they want. This yields to better conversion than a broad  keyword which attracts lots of traffic (if you succeeded to outrank other sites) but leads to a lower conversion ratio.
Keep in mind that keywords are essential. It is one factor that can make a big difference in traffic volume. In other words it can make or break your site. One good reason why webmasters are spending a lot of time in researching the right keywords to use for the content of their site.

How to get number one on SEO rankings?

December 12th, 2009

Numerous websites, wanted to have the number one rank in the search engines today, such as Google and Yahoo. It is a tough task to do before you reach number one, but with enormous patience and good strategy, page ranking will be yours in time.

Keywords optimization is one way of optimizing your site. It must be present in all paragraphs of your unique article to get rankings. Write article of your interest and ensure that they are unique to avoid duplicate content on the World Wide Web. This will prove that you created your own article including the keywords you want. If your site is about sports, then put all essential keywords, like sporting tips, sports equipments, sports apparel, etc. Submit these articles to article directory site. Do not forget to link your website using the submitted articles so readers will go back to your page, thus, it will increase traffic and money.

One way to produce high-quality articles is to read articles about your choice topic online. Do not copy its content because it’s prohibited. It’s a form of stealing from other sites in which you can be jailed or ban if detected. If you can not write on your own style, use them only as a reference. On this way, you can rewrite them using your own style.

Another option is to have videos on your site. This will not help you to get top on the ranking but it will serve as an advertisement of your site to create huge site traffic.

If you have product and service site, another way to get ranking is to post reviews on your site. It can be testimonials on services, reliability report, consumer satisfaction, etc. On this method, consumers will know that you are offering reliable product and services. Therefore, they will come back to you from time to time. And lastly, these satisfied consumers will refer your site to their friends. It will create more and more traffic because it has been tested by their friends.

Search Engine Optimization has a lot of task to do before reaching the top. Do not loose hope, put more energy for the job and do not push yourself too hard. Always remember that today’s well-known website did not start as big as they are now. You and these sites have one in common. Both of you as well as the other rising websites begin from nothing. They strive hard before they get standing. It can 2-3 years now, but interest in SEO is definitely the key to success. Do not waste time, use your idle days to study and enhance your skill in Search Engine Optimization.

Chrome OS?

December 9th, 2009

“Speed, Simplicity and Security”, these are the three pillars of Google’s new open source project.

It was back in July where Google announced that they are creating a new operating system called Chrome OS. It is the natural evolution of what was done with the Chrome browser, as stated by Sundar Pichai, VP of product management, and Chrome OS engineering director Matthew Papakipos.
The key ideas behind this innovation, as emphasized by its developer is aimed for faster booting set up; simplicity as presented by the chrome browser extending to the OS itself; and easy detection of malicious processes. As for the security, in case a malware is detected, all the cached data will be saved and Chrome OS is subsequently re-downloaded, then freshly imaged on a machine.
In Chrome OS, every application is web based. Meaning, softwares are found on the internet not on the computer (i.e., Google Doc, eMail). Basically, the user creates, edits, saves, and performs almost everything on the web. They emphasized that users don’t have to install applications. However, this brought an argument whether it would be secured to store data and important files on the web, as web files can be hacked and what would happen if there would be no internet connection.
One feature of this operating system is called cloud computing. This means that all data in Chrome OS is in the cloud. So, if your netbook crashed, flooded or went through other miserable events, the concept tells us that you won’t loose any files at all. You just have to buy a new Chrome machine then log back into the cloud and see your old files.
The fast growth of netbook market is one big influence of the creation of this new platform. So, for desktop user who is excited about it, the scheduled release of this new Google product is next year. Unfortunately, Chrome OS is mainly focused with netbooks as of the moment, but Google reassure that it won’t be limited to netbooks for the succeeding years.

Social Meeting Survey – Full Compehension in the Business World

October 12th, 2009

Its always amazing to see two heads of a coin – with neither visible or apparent

Recently the prestigious firm Citibank conducted an “in depth”  survey of standard run of the mill business owners and contacts regarding the role of Social Bookmarking sites in their current and future advertising and ad campaigns.

It might be simply said that you might ask a blind person….. to describe an ad on the page of a newspaper

Its an amazing fact when interacting with what might be considered “successful businesses”  even those run by younger management.   Simply put most are clueless.  Even if words and phrases such as “Google Analytics ” are thrown around those are buzz words, just like name dropping at cocktail parties – only to tell the truth the teller of tall tales – or of friends and acquaintances has some idea of what and who they are talking about it , and the concepts involved in it all

Its an amazing fact in this brave new world .   Clueless at basic concepts , facts . tools and paradigms

There aught to be a  law against such stupidity and arrogrance

Not unlike rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic in 1912 or serving drinks while the ship sinks

Lol lots of luck

What can be best said is that it represents the watershed of opportunity and opportunity for SEO practitioners and those businesses who have the good fortune and insight as well as insights to work together and along , along in concert with their SEO people and agencies
Listen to the wind you can hear the phrase “Boy did I get an unbelievable deal at xxxx newspaper”
I am really taking them for a ride
Oh really ?

Did you grandmother never tell you the parable of putting all your eggs into one basket or even two baskets  ?

Marketing Times are Changing

October 1st, 2009

Newspapers are a case in point.  Newspapers and the whole industry are in decline many say.  A flux say others.  A change is as good as a rest .  Yet to many of the hot shots in the newspaper ( ad)  services its a time of terror.  Its even gotten to the point that a prominent British newspaper recently called the freebee generation spoiled brats who want something for nothing.

On the other hand maybe it is a a case of an old business model with clueless management riding the wave , milking ad monies . revenues and income to death.  Look at the TV industry in America as an example.  Mindless fodder all put out , pablum to soothe the masses , all to sell ads.  In the same way newspapers became flyers with articles.  The sad part of that the major national newspapers ( who may well not survive in present forms and size), are used as the research materials of most of the other media – TV etc and are simply hashed and rehashed.   Has it yet not occurred to the high paid television executives that while they are planning their campaigns with fancy colored graphs and charts, calculating to the ot nots that kids are no longer watching TV hours a day.  People who do not have tv anymore really do not miss it they say.  Waste of time , low quality , all they need to read – be it even current events can be easily had on the internet – you tube and the like.  On top of that young males report that on the internet with a messenger service ICQ program -Yahoo , MSN Messenger in its current renamed form , Yahoo Messenger of Eyeball Chat – they at least have a chance of scoring with a girl.

Yes the times they are a changing.  Its a new medium with new tools.  Better get on the bandwagon.
